Microsoft just signed an almost $500 million HoloLens contract with the US military, providing HoloLens prototypes for combat and training. With the expanded deal, some 100,000 soldiers might use the augmented reality headsets in combat. Microsoft beat out some of the venerable defense contractors over the summer (Booz Allen, Lockheed etc), showcasing how tech firms and AI are taking on (and over) new industries. MS unlike other tech firms has gone after the DoD JEDI business and president/CLO Brad Smith in a post this month said “we want the people who serve this country to know that we at Microsoft have their backs.”
